1967 Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-001
Error
Description
Attributed by the Wexler Team (Wexler Variety ID: 1967 10c WDDO-001), this 1967 Roosevelt Dime obverse doubled die shows a very close spread toward the center on the designer's initials (JS), IN GOD WE TRUST, and LIBERTY. The specimen examined was drawn from a 1967 Special Mint Set and displays the characteristic proof-like surface of that production. Obverse die markers are specific: a die chip in the hair at the top of the head; a north-south die scratch at the forehead; a die gouge near the rim below the R of TRUST; a die gouge above and between the N of IN and the G of GOD. Reverse die markers are equally detailed: die pitting over ST of STATES; a die scratch through ME of AMERICA; a die gouge inside the C of AMERICA; multiple die gouges around ME of DIME; a die gouge inside the O of ONE; a die gouge left of the first T of STATES. The 1967 Roosevelt Dime was issued exclusively in Special Mint Sets during 1965-1967, struck on polished planchets with increased die pressure, producing proof-like fields.
