Description

Twelfth in the obverse doubled die census for the 1967 Kennedy half dollar, DDO-012 displays medium spread on WE TRUST, the 67 digits of the date, and the RTY of LIBERTY on Gilroy Roberts' portrait of President Kennedy. VarietyVista assigned identifiers UVC-348 and DMR-023, documenting three die stages: Stage A at early die state (unconfirmed), Stage B where both obverse and reverse surfaces have reached early-to-mid die state (EMDS), and Stage C at late die state (unconfirmed). The EMDS confirmation for Stage B provides an intermediate data point in the die wear progression. Kennedy half dollars of the 1965-1970 period were struck in 40% silver-clad composition — an outer layer of 80% silver and 20% copper bonded to a core of 21.5% silver and 78.5% copper — creating a distinctive edge appearance where the copper-toned core is visible between the silver-toned outer layers. No mintmarks appeared on 1967-dated coins as part of the Mint's temporary suspension of mintmarks during the 1965-1967 coin shortage period. The "BS" notation in comments corresponds to an internal VarietyVista classification abbreviation.
