1967 Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-006

Description

Listed in the Cherrypickers' Guide as FS-50-1967-103 and designated CONECA 1-O-II+V, this 1967 Kennedy Half Dollar displays an unusual combination of two doubling classes on a single die. A strong clockwise spread pivoting from approximately 4 o'clock is visible on GOD, LIB, the hair at the top of the forehead, the nose, the chin, and the front point of the bust. Simultaneously, a Class VI spread toward the center appears on 967, WE TRUST, and ERTY. This dual-class mechanism — where rotational and radial displacements occurred during separate hubbing impressions — creates a complex doubling pattern affecting different areas with different directional characteristics. The 1967 Kennedy Half Dollar was struck in 40% silver clad composition during a special period in Mint history: from 1965 through 1967, no mint marks were applied to any U.S. coins as part of the government's response to a nationwide coin shortage. Assigned the Wexler designation 1967 50c WDDO-006, this variety stands out among Kennedy Half doubled dies for the breadth and strength of its dual-class doubling across nearly the entire obverse portrait and legends.
