Description

Struck as part of the Special Mint Set program that replaced traditional proof sets from 1965 through 1967, this SMS Jefferson Nickel carries Class II Distorted Hub Doubling on the designer's initials FS, along with visible doubling on IN GOD. The Special Mint Set coins occupy a unique niche between business strikes and proofs, produced with enhanced quality but without the full mirror-finish proof process, and they carry no mintmark since all SMS coins were struck at the Philadelphia Mint during the years when mintmarks were temporarily discontinued. Die markers on the obverse include a die scratch on Jefferson's nose and a die gouge to the upper right of the star. On the reverse, a die scratch appears above MO of MONTICELLO, accompanied by a die dot to the upper right of the left long window. Cross-referenced as Wexler Variety ID: 1967 WDDO-009 SMS, with attribution by Brian A. Ribar. The ninth cataloged doubled die obverse for 1967 SMS Jefferson Nickels reflects the growing collector attention given to these transitional-era coins that bridge the gap between the pre-1965 proof era and the resumption of San Francisco proof production in 1968.
