1967 Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-002
ErrorDescription
Struck as part of the 1967 Special Mint Set program, WDDO-002 is the second Wexler-cataloged doubled die obverse for the SMS Jefferson Nickel, displaying very close Class II doubling on IN GOD WE TRUST and the designer's initials FS. Special Mint Sets, produced 1965-1967 as a substitute for proof sets during the coinage transition era, featured coins with a finish between business strike and proof quality. Felix Schlag's FS initials, on the truncation of Jefferson's bust, display the Class II distorted hub doubling alongside the motto letters. A die scratch above the 6 of the date provides a secondary attribution marker, and the reverse is listed as WDDR-006, establishing a dual-attribution die pair with doubling on both sides. Schlag designed the Jefferson Nickel following a 1938 public competition, and his initials were added beginning in 1966 — making 1967 only the second year to bear the FS monogram. Struck at Philadelphia without a mintmark on 75% copper, 25% nickel planchets at 21.2mm. Examine IGWT and the FS initials for the very close Class II spread, verify the die scratch above 6, and check the reverse for WDDR-006.
