1967 Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-007
ErrorDescription
Attributed by Mark McPherson, WDDO-007 of the 1967 SMS Jefferson nickel is a Class II distorted hub doubling variety showing very close doubling on LIBERTY, the star, the date, and the designer's initials FS (Felix Schlag). Obverse die markers include a vertical die gouge right of the numeral 7, a vertical die gouge right of the first T of TRUST, and die cracks in Jefferson's hair at 11:00. The reverse carries a vertical die gouge between the second U and S of PLURIBUS. As a Special Mint Set issue from 1967, this coin was produced during the three-year period when the Mint suspended regular proof coinage and issued SMS coins instead, featuring a finish between business strike and proof quality. SMS coins were struck at San Francisco without mintmarks during this transitional era. The close Class II doubling on LIBERTY and the date serves as the primary pickup area, with the die cracks in the hair at 11:00 providing secondary confirmation. The very close spread across multiple obverse elements confirms a subtle but definite hub tilt during die manufacture.
