1967 Doubled Die Obverse DDO-001

Description

Struck as part of the Special Mint Set (SMS) program that replaced proof sets from 1965 through 1967, this primary doubled die obverse for the 1967 Jefferson Nickel carries very light spread on Felix Schlag's designer initials FS and on the motto IN GOD WE TRUST. SMS coins occupy a middle ground between business strikes and proofs — produced with better-than-normal care and finish but without the multiple-strike proof process — and die varieties on SMS issues are tracked separately from standard business strikes. What makes DDO-001 particularly noteworthy is its pairing with DDR-001 on the reverse, creating a complete doubled die pair where both obverse and reverse carry their own primary doubled die designations. Finding both sides doubled on the same coin doubles the attribution interest and collector appeal. Die markers UVC-1310 and DMR-003 identify this specific die, and the 1967 date carries no mintmark because the Mint discontinued mintmarks from 1965 through 1967 to discourage hoarding. Very light spread means the doubling requires careful magnification to detect, particularly on the small designer initials. The SMS program produced approximately 1.86 million sets in 1967, establishing the population from which DDO-001 specimens can be found.
