Description

Thirty-fourth in the obverse doubled die census for the 1966 Kennedy half dollar, DDO-034 displays strong extra thickness across three major design elements: IN GOD WE TRUST, the date, and LIBERTY — a breadth of affected inscriptions indicating substantial hub displacement during die preparation. Gilroy Roberts designed the Kennedy half dollar obverse, introduced in 1964 as a memorial to President John F. Kennedy, and by 1966 the composition had shifted from the original 90% silver to 40% silver clad (silver bonded to a copper core). The 1966 issue carries no mintmark because all coins were struck at Philadelphia during the period when mintmarks were temporarily removed (1965-1967) as part of the government's response to the coin shortage.
