1966 Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-005
Error
Description
Positioned fifth in the Wexler Team's sequence of 1966 Kennedy Half Dollar doubled die obverses and cataloged as Wexler Variety ID 1966 50c WDDO-005, this variety occupies the middle position within the DDO family for the date, flanked by WDDO-004 and WDDO-006 in the numerical sequence. Each Wexler number represents a unique working die with its own independently occurring hub misalignment event — no two share the same displacement signature even though all were produced from the same master hub using the same hubbing equipment at the same facility during the same production period. Attribution of WDDO-005 therefore requires identifying the specific combination of affected design elements, spread direction, spread magnitude, and supplementary die markers that distinguish this die from the eight or more other known 1966 DDOs. Gilroy Roberts' portrait of President Kennedy was adopted for the half dollar denomination beginning in 1964, just months after the president's assassination, and the design's deeply sculpted hair texture, bold ear contour, and detailed jacket lapel provide numerous reference surfaces where hub doubling can be detected and characterized. The 1966 production used 40% silver-clad planchets weighing 11.5 grams — a composition that gives these coins a distinctive edge appearance with visible layers at the rim cross-section, unlike the uniform edge of the preceding 90% silver issues or the succeeding copper-nickel clad coins. The absence of mintmarks on 1965-1967 coinage eliminates facility attribution as a diagnostic tool. Collectors pursuing a comprehensive 1966 Kennedy DDO variety set should acquire detailed photographs or overlay comparisons of all known WDDO varieties to establish the distinguishing characteristics of each individual die.
