1966 Doubled Die Obverse DDO-032
Error
Description
Thirty-second cataloged doubled die obverse for the 1966 Kennedy Half Dollar, DDO-032 exhibits a light spread on the chin, lips, nose, eye, and upper hair of President Kennedy's portrait. VarietyVista assigns UVC-414 and DMR-039, with Stage B at Mid-Die State documented by four die gouge dots behind the lower ear. These four dots serve as the primary secondary attribution marker, distinguishing this die from thirty-one other cataloged doubled die obverses for 1966. The business strike designation confirms a circulation-issue coin from the 1965-1967 window when no proof sets or mintmarked coins were produced — all issues bore no mintmark and were struck at Philadelphia. The 1966 Kennedy Half Dollar was composed of 40% silver in a clad sandwich, the transitional composition adopted after the 90% silver standard ended with 1964. Gilroy Roberts designed Kennedy's obverse portrait in sufficient relief that hub misalignment produces detectable doubling across the facial features. Examine the chin, lips, nose, eye, and hair under magnification, then locate the four die gouge dots behind the lower ear to confirm Stage B.
