1966 Doubled Die Obverse DDO-027

Description

Produced as a business strike on the forty-percent silver composition, this 1966 Kennedy Half Dollar DDO-027 displays light spread on the chin, ear, designer's initials, hair under the R of LIBERTY, the back of the neck, and WE TRUST. A light counterclockwise spread is also present on IBE of LIBERTY, indicating rotational hub misalignment during die production. Die markers include UVC-101 and DMR-029. Three die stages are recorded: Stage A in early die state (unconfirmed); Stage B at mid-die state with a die scratch running north to south between WE TRUST on the obverse and the reverse also at mid-die state; and Stage C with both obverse and reverse in late die state. The 1966 issue carries no mintmark — all coins were struck at Philadelphia during the period (1965-1967) when the Mint omitted mintmarks in an effort to discourage hoarding during the nationwide coin shortage. The counterclockwise rotation on LIBERTY adds an extra attribution dimension beyond the more typical spread patterns on the portrait elements.
