1966 Doubled Die Obverse DDO-024

Description

Produced as a Special Mint Set (SMS) coin during the 1965-1967 period when the Mint suspended regular proof production, DDO-024 for the 1966 Kennedy Half Dollar is a confirmed dual variety — the reverse is listed as DDR-001. Strong spread appears on Kennedy's profile, eye, ear, and designer's initials GR (Gilroy Roberts), with medium spread on GOD WE and light counterclockwise rotation on the last 6 of the date. Die markers under UVC-098 and DMR-026 document three stages: Stage A shows a light die scratch south from the tip of the nose at early die state, with the reverse DDR-001 also at early die state. Stage B finds both sides at mid-die-state. Stage C is late die state but unconfirmed. SMS coins carry no mint mark and feature a distinctive satin-like finish between business strike and proof quality. The dual-variety status — obverse and reverse doubling on a single SMS Kennedy Half — makes this especially collectible among half dollar specialists.
