1966 Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-013

Description

Struck as part of the 1966 Special Mint Set — the Mint's substitute for proof sets during the 1965-1967 coin shortage period — this WDDO-013 Kennedy Half Dollar shows a Class V clockwise spread pivoting from approximately the 5:00 position. The doubling appears on LIB of LIBERTY, the front curl of hair, and the upper hair details, concentrated where the rotational displacement is greatest relative to the pivot point. This variety also incorporates the doubling characteristics of WWHO-002, linking it to a working hub repunching event. Obverse markers include a small die gouge southwest of the I in LIBERTY and another below the Y in LIBERTY. The reverse carries a short vertical die gouge to the left of the O in OF. Attributed by the Wexler Team under Wexler Variety ID 1966 50-cent SMS WDDO-013. Special Mint Set coins received enhanced striking quality without the full proof preparation, and hub doubling from the die manufacturing process transfers regardless of the striking method used. The dual WDDO and WWHO classification distinguishes die-level from hub-level anomalies.
