Description

Twenty-second in the obverse doubled die census for the 1966 Kennedy half dollar, DDO-022 stands out for its strong spread on the profile, eye, ear, and Gilroy Roberts' designer initials GR, combined with medium spread on GOD WE from the motto — an unusually broad scope of affected design elements that spans both the portrait and inscriptions. VarietyVista assigned die identifiers UVC-096 and DMR-024, tracking three die stages: Stage A at early die state (unconfirmed), Stage B where both obverse and reverse surfaces show mid die state, and Stage C at late die state (unconfirmed). The "BS" notation confirms this die was used for business strike production. The 1966 Kennedy half dollar was struck in 40% silver-clad composition during the transition period, and like all 1965-1967 coinage, carried no mintmark regardless of the producing facility. Total half dollar production in 1966 reached approximately 108.98 million pieces. The strong spread designation on the portrait elements — profile, eye, and ear — places this variety among the more dramatic Kennedy half dollar DDOs, where the doubling is visible on the sculptural contours of Kennedy's face rather than only on inscriptions.
