Description

One of the most significant Kennedy Half Dollar doubled dies, this 1966 SMS DDO-020 is also designated FS-106, indicating inclusion in the Cherrypickers' Guide. Strong spread shows on Kennedy's profile, eye, ear, and designer Gilroy Roberts's initials along with IN GOD, while medium spread appears on the hair above the forehead and WE. A clockwise rotation is evident on the IB of LIBERTY, and light spread appears on TRUST and the date. As a Special Mint Set issue produced 1965-1967 when the Mint suspended proof production, this coin was struck in 40% silver clad composition. Tracked under VarietyVista codes UVC-094 and DMR-022 with three die stages encompassing early, mid, and late die states on both sides. The breadth of design elements affected by the doubling, from portrait details through the lettering, makes this one of the most visually dramatic SMS Kennedy varieties known to collectors seeking top-tier doubled die half dollars.
