Description

Documented by VarietyVista with die markers UVC-082 and DMR-010, this 1966 Kennedy Half Dollar DDO-008 displays strong spread on Kennedy's profile, eye, hair above the forehead, ear, and designer's initials FG (Frank Gasparro's initials on the reverse, with GR for Gilroy Roberts on the obverse), along with medium spread on IN GOD accompanied by clockwise rotation on the LIB of LIBERTY. This combination of strong portrait doubling with rotational spread on the motto creates a visually impressive variety with multiple diagnostic checkpoints. Four documented die stages provide comprehensive production tracking: Stage A is early die state (EDS, unconfirmed), Stage B places both obverse and reverse in mid-die-state (MDS), Stage C is late-mid die state (LMDS) marked by a die clash in front of the eye, heavy die scratches on the obverse, and numerous die scratches on the reverse, and Stage D is late die state (LDS) showing new die scratches on the obverse, noticeably thinner WE TRUST lettering from abrading, and new die scratches on the reverse. The progressive thinning of WE TRUST through abrading in Stage D documents deliberate die maintenance where the Mint polished the die face to extend its service life, inadvertently reducing the depth of inscriptions in the process. The 1966 Kennedy Half Dollar was struck in silver-clad composition (40% silver overall — an outer layer of 80% silver and 20% copper bonded to a 21% silver, 79% copper core) weighing approximately 11.5 grams with a 30.61 mm diameter. Gilroy Roberts designed the obverse portrait, introduced in 1964 to honor President John F. Kennedy. The four-stage documentation with its detailed die deterioration progression makes DDO-008 one of the more thoroughly chronicled Kennedy Half Dollar doubled die varieties.
