Description

A doubled working hub obverse variety, the 1966 Kennedy Half Dollar WWHO-003 displays very close tripling spread towards the center on the date, IN GOD WE TRUST, and the Y of LIBERTY. Unlike doubled die varieties that originate from a single die, working hub doubling occurs during the hub-to-die transfer process and can appear on multiple working dies produced from the same affected hub — meaning the die markers will vary across different working dies struck from this hub. Attributed by the Wexler Team with no known cross-references, WWHO-003 is notable for exhibiting tripling rather than simple doubling, indicating the hub impressed into the die at three slightly different positions. The 1966 Kennedy Half Dollar was produced without a mint mark during the period when the Mint suppressed mint marks (1965-1967) to discourage hoarding. Gilroy Roberts' Kennedy portrait and the strong lettering of IN GOD WE TRUST provide ideal surfaces for detecting the close centripetal spread characteristic of this hub variety.
