1965 Doubled Die Reverse DDR-002
Error
Description
DDR-002 of the 1965 Kennedy half dollar displays light doubling spread on UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, HALF, and all stars in the circle, with the strongest displacement concentrated at the top of the reverse. Cataloged under UVC-068 and DMR-008, the variety is documented across three die stages. Stage A shows both reverse and obverse in early die state. Stage B advances to mid-die state on both sides. Stage C is recorded as late die state but remains unconfirmed. The 1965 Kennedy half dollar holds special significance as part of the 40% silver clad composition series produced from 1965 through 1970, after Congress eliminated 90% silver coinage. This transitional composition, containing an outer layer of 80% silver bonded to a 21% silver inner core, distinguishes these issues from both the earlier full-silver 1964 and the later copper-nickel clad versions. The star circle on the reverse provides an effective area for detecting this variety, as even light doubling on the evenly spaced star points becomes apparent under magnification.
