1964 Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-005
Error
Description
The 1964 Proof Washington Quarter WDDO-005 is a Wexler-attributed doubled die obverse struck in 90% silver at Philadelphia in the last year of silver Washington Quarters. Proof coinage returned to Philadelphia production in 1950, and the 1964 proof sets represent the final silver proofs before the clad transition in 1965 — lending particular significance to any variety on this issue. The obverse doubling is a close spread toward the rim, most visible on LIBERTY. Two short vertical die gouges serve as primary obverse markers, located between the upper I and B of LIBERTY. The reverse of this coin is itself a doubled die catalogued as 1964 25 cents Proof WDDR-006, showing a spread toward the center on STATES OF AMERICA, E PLURIBUS UNUM, the eagle's left wing, the branch ends, the lower right leaves, and slightly on QUARTER DOLLAR. A die gouge appears between the bottom of the second S in STATES and the O in OF. The paired nature of obverse and reverse doubling on this die marriage makes WDDO-005 particularly attractive to variety collectors pursuing compounded attributions.
