Representing the terminal year of 90% silver Washington Quarter production, the 1964 Proof WDDR-001 is the first Wexler-cataloged doubled die reverse for this historic date. The obverse die is also listed as WDDO-001, exhibiting a close spread toward the rim on LIBERTY, making this die pair a dual-attribution variety with doubling on both sides. The close spread on LIBERTY provides the primary obverse diagnostic: examine the letter outlines under magnification for the slight doubled contour displaced toward the rim. On the reverse, the doubled die elements confirm WDDR-001 through a secondary hub impression that shifted during reverse die preparation. Flanagan's Washington Quarter, featuring the Houdon-modeled bust and heraldic eagle reverse, had been in continuous production since 1932. The 1964 proof was struck on polished 90% silver planchets at 24.3mm, and its position as the terminal silver issue gives every 1964 proof quarter heightened collector significance.
