Description

Displaying Class II distorted hub doubling, the 1964 WDDR-084 Jefferson nickel shows spread across UNITED STATES OF AMERICA that decreases from left to right, with additional doubling visible on the M of MONTICELLO. Class II doubling arises from a warped or distorted hub, producing an uneven spread that varies in intensity across the die face — in this case strongest at the left end of the legend and tapering toward the right. The M of MONTICELLO provides a secondary confirmation point away from the main legend. Reverse die markers include a die clash above the left porch area and a die scratch running through EN of CENTS. No obverse die markers have been noted. Cataloged by Brian A. Ribar under Wexler Variety ID 1964 WDDR-084, this variety joins an extensive roster of 1964 Jefferson nickel DDRs, reflecting the enormous production volume of that year. The die clash above the porch indicates this die experienced at least one contact event with the obverse die without a planchet present, adding a secondary point of interest beyond the hub doubling itself.
