Description

Produced during the great coin shortage of 1964 when the Philadelphia Mint ran production at extraordinary volumes, this Jefferson Nickel carries a doubled die reverse cataloged as DDR-041. Light spread is visible on E PLURIBUS UNUM and OF AMERICA, providing two separate inscription areas where collectors can confirm the doubling. Stage A documentation records both the reverse and obverse in early die state, indicating that the doubling was present from the very beginning of this die's working life. The 1964 coin shortage prompted Congress to eliminate mintmarks on coins beginning in 1965, making 1964 the last year Philadelphia-minted Jeffersons carried no mintmark as a standard practice rather than as an emergency measure. The immense production volumes required to address the national shortage resulted in accelerated die manufacturing, which in turn generated a large population of doubled die varieties for this date. Cataloged by VarietyVista as UVC-1276 and DMR-049, DDR-041 is a regular-strike Philadelphia issue. The light nature of the spread means that careful examination under magnification is necessary to distinguish the secondary hub impression from die deterioration or strike artifacts that can mimic doubling on heavily used dies.
