1964 Doubled Die Reverse DDR-037

Description

Documented by VarietyVista with die identification UVC-1272 and DMR-045, this 1964 Jefferson Nickel DDR-037 displays strong spread and extra thickness on E PLURIBUS UNUM, UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, FIVE CENTS, and both building edges of Monticello — an unusually comprehensive doubling pattern where virtually every reverse inscription and the building outline show the effects of hub displacement. The doubling on both building edges is particularly notable because the architectural outline of Monticello provides long, straight reference lines against which even subtle secondary impressions create clearly visible parallel elements. Three die stages are documented: Stage A at early-to-mid die state (EMDS) with a light die scratch under TICE of MONTICELLO and the obverse also in EMDS; Stage B at mid-die-state (MDS), unconfirmed; and Stage C at late die state (LDS), unconfirmed. The Stage A die scratch under TICE provides the earliest confirmed diagnostic marker for this die. The 1964 Jefferson Nickel was struck at the Philadelphia Mint in standard copper-nickel composition (75% copper, 25% nickel) weighing 5.00 grams with a 21.21 mm diameter. Felix Schlag designed the Jefferson portrait obverse and Monticello reverse, which had served the denomination since 1938. The 1964 date represents a pivotal moment in U.S. numismatic history as the final year before the Coinage Act of 1965 transformed the coinage landscape, and the enormous 1964 production runs — the Mint was stockpiling coins ahead of the composition changes for other denominations — generated a large die population from which numerous doubled die varieties emerged.
