1964-D Doubled Die Obverse DDO-004
Error
Description
Cataloged by VarietyVista as DDO-004, this 1964-D Roosevelt Dime shows a light spread and extra thickness on the LI of LIBERTY, IN GOD WE TRUST, the designer's initials from top to bottom, and the date. Die markers UVC-812 and DMR-042 identify this working die. Stage A is Early Die State (unconfirmed); Stage B is Mid Die State, confirmed by a die crack from the head to the rim at K-1, a light die crack on the forehead, and a die crack from the upper olive leaf to the rim through the first T of STATES. Stage C is Late Die State (unconfirmed). An additional note identifies this die as ODV-011 — the blunt 9 obverse variety — adding a second attributable characteristic. The 1964-D Roosevelt Dime was struck in 90% silver and had a Denver Mint production of approximately 1.36 billion coins, the highest in Roosevelt Dime history to that point. As the final year of silver dimes before the 1965 clad transition, 1964-D examples carry added historical interest. Despite the enormous mintage, die-specific varieties with documented markers like DDO-004 are individually scarce and represent meaningful targets for the variety collector.
