Description

Holding the primary DDO-001 designation for the date, the 1964-D doubled die obverse on the Roosevelt dime shows medium spread on LIBERTY with light spread on IN GOD WE TRUST. Cataloged as UVC-475 DMR-023, this variety has an unusually well-documented four-stage die progression. Stage A is the early die state, currently unconfirmed. Stage B, the mid-die state, introduces a die clash through the olive branch on the reverse with the obverse also at mid-die state. Stage C, the late die state, shows a die crack from the rim left of the U of UNITED extending almost to the olive, with the obverse at late die state. Stage D, the very late die state, adds a die crack from the right stem south to the rim through IM of DIME, with the obverse also at very late die state. The obverse is designated ODV-011 with a blunt 9 in the date, a die variety classification identifying the specific obverse die. As the last year of .900 silver Roosevelt dime production before the Coinage Act of 1965, the 1964-D carries historical significance, and this four-stage die progression offers collectors the opportunity to assemble a die state set documenting the complete working life of a single die pair.
