Description

Third southward-repunched D variety for the final Denver Franklin Half Dollar, completing the trio of D/D South RPMs (001, 002, 003) that together account for three of the five varieties cataloged for this last-year date. RPM-003's displacement characteristics — while sharing the general southward direction — are distinguishable from RPMs 001 and 002 through careful measurement of the vertical displacement distance between the initial and final D impressions and the specific areas where overlap between the two punches is most visible. Three separate dies receiving similar positional errors (all too high, all corrected southward) may reflect a consistent setup condition in the die shop during 1963-D production — perhaps the mintmark punch fixture or guide positioned the punch systematically too high, requiring repeated southward corrections across multiple dies. This systematic pattern, if confirmed, would provide insight into the physical workspace and tooling used for mintmark application during the Franklin Half Dollar's final production period. Struck in 90% silver at 30.6mm. As the third of three southward RPMs, this variety completes the southward-displacement group within the 1963-D's five-variety RPM set.
