Second southward-repunched D variety on the final Denver Franklin Half Dollar, this 1963-D RPM-002 shares the D/D South direction with RPMs 001 and 003, creating a trio of southward-displaced varieties that must be differentiated by their specific overlap characteristics. While all three show the initial D above the final position, each die received its mintmark independently — differences in the exact displacement distance, the angle of the initial punch, and the force of application create measurable distinctions between the three varieties. The predominance of southward correction on the 1963-D (three of five RPMs) parallels the pattern seen on the 1951-S, where three of four RPMs were also southward, suggesting that high-position initial punching was a common tendency in mintmark application.
