1963 Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-026

Description

Twenty-sixth doubled die obverse cataloged for the 1963 Washington Quarter, WDDO-026 shows a very close Class II spread toward the center on IN GOD WE TRUST, the date, and the bottom of the ribbon beneath Washington's portrait. The centering direction of the spread indicates the hub's displacement during the second impression moved the design elements inward, a geometry that produces the characteristic tightening effect visible under magnification. Attributed by the Wexler Team under Wexler Variety ID 1963 25¢ WDDO-026, this variety carries no additional cross-references in other major catalog systems. Obverse die markers are distinctive: a die scratch runs east-northeast from the center of the E in LIBERTY, two parallel die scratches run southwest from the bottom left of the D in GOD, and a light die scratch crosses the base of the bust. On the reverse, a die gouge can be found to the right of the lower A in STATES. Twenty-six doubled die obverses for the 1963 Philadelphia quarter reflects the intensive research applied to this pre-1964 silver-composition date, where the 90% silver content ensures strong collector interest and thorough examination of surviving specimens.
