1963 Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-019

Description

Cross-referenced as CONECA 3-O-V and Cherrypickers FS-25-1963-103, the 1963 Washington quarter Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-019 features a clockwise spread on the 6 in the date and the lower right R in LIBERTY. Obverse die markers include a die scratch running WNW from the top left of the 3 in the date, a die gouge to the left of the upper 1 in the date, a die crack across the base of the bust, and a die crack running E/W through the upper hair. Reverse die markers include a die crack running down the eagle's right wing. The Cherrypickers listing as FS-25-1963-103 confirms this variety's standing in that well-regarded specialist reference, which designates only those doubled dies considered significant enough for inclusion. The 1963 Washington quarter was struck in 90% silver at the Philadelphia Mint — one of the final two years of 90% silver quarter production before the Coinage Act of 1965 mandated the switch to clad composition. Clockwise spreads (Class III) on LIBERTY and the date produce a shelf effect on the lower portions of the affected letters, most visible on high-grade examples with full luster intact.
