1963 Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-014

Description

On this 1963 Washington Quarter business strike, a spread towards the center shows on IN GOD WE TRUST, the date, the designer's initials, and the bottom of the ribbon — design elements positioned where Class II distorted hub doubling produces its most visible displacement. Obverse die markers include die scratches running east-northeast from the upper 9 in the date, a die scratch running east from the top of the I in LIBERTY, die scratches running southwest from the lower T in LIBERTY, and a die scratch running southwest-northeast to the right of the Y in LIBERTY. No significant reverse die markers were noted. Cataloged under Wexler Variety ID 1963 25' WDDO-014, this variety belongs to one of the final years of the silver Washington Quarter, struck in 90% silver composition before the Coinage Act of 1965 ended silver in circulating coinage. The 1963 Philadelphia quarter saw massive production, generating a substantial number of die pairs and correspondingly many opportunities for hubbing misalignment to create doubled die varieties for collectors to discover.
