1963 Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-007

Description

Attributed by the Wexler Team and extensively cross-referenced as CONECA 6-R-II, Cherrypickers FS-25-1963-802, and Wexler 1963 25¢ Pr WDDR-007, this 1963 Proof Washington Quarter exhibits very strong Class II doubled die reverse characteristics with the spread directed toward the center. The doubling is visible on USA, E PLURIBUS UNUM, both of the eagle's wings, the eagle's talons, the wreath, and QUARTER DOLLAR, affecting virtually every major reverse design element. The breadth of the doubling across nearly the entire reverse, combined with its very strong intensity, makes WDDR-007 one of the most significant proof Washington Quarter doubled die varieties. The Cherrypickers listing as FS-25-1963-802 confirms its importance within the series. An obverse die gouge on the lower part of the upper fold in the ribbon and a short, light reverse die scratch between the lower A and M in AMERICA serve as die markers for precise attribution. As a proof issue, this quarter was struck on specially prepared polished planchets at the Philadelphia Mint. The 1963 proof quarter was struck in 90% silver and 10% copper, as it predates the 1965 transition to clad coinage.
