1963 Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-010

Description

Cataloged by the Wexler Team as 1963 10¢ Pr WDDO-010 and submitted by Brian Ribar, this proof Roosevelt Silver Dime exhibits minor doubling on the upper right side of the 3 in the date — a subtle but positionally specific doubling feature confined to one portion of a single date digit. While no significant primary die markers were noted in the initial documentation, supplementary observations identify an obverse die scratch on the rim to the left of IN, two die gouges positioned northeast of the 3 in the date, and a small die gouge to the right of the Y in LIBERTY. The reverse carries a die scratch on the rim above the TE in STATES, a die gouge in the lower opening of the E in STATES, and a die gouge above the first U in PLURIBUS. These supplementary marker positions distributed across both dies provide a robust attribution framework despite the relatively subtle nature of the doubling itself. As a proof strike from the Philadelphia Mint, this dime was produced using polished dies on specially prepared planchets, creating mirror-like fields that enhance the visibility of even minor design anomalies against the reflective surface. John R. Sinnock designed the Roosevelt Dime obverse and torch-with-branches reverse. The 1963 proof dime was struck in 90% silver composition (90% silver, 10% copper) weighing 2.50 grams with a 17.9 mm diameter — part of the penultimate year of silver proof dime production before the composition change.
