Description

Originally listed as WDDO-031, this proof 1963 Jefferson Nickel doubled die obverse was renumbered to WDDO-020 when the original WDDO-020 listing was delisted for being too minor. Class II distorted hub doubling shows on IN GOD WE TRUST, decreasing from left to right across the motto — a gradient effect consistent with rotational displacement where the doubling is strongest at the point farthest from the pivot. Attributed by Brian A. Ribar under Wexler Variety ID 1963 WDDO-020 Proof, this variety carries detailed die markers: on the obverse, a die scratch to the right of Jefferson's eye and a die dot below the 96 of the date; on the reverse, a die dot above the first O of MONTICELLO. The renumbering history from WDDO-031 to WDDO-020 reflects the self-correcting nature of variety research, where catalog entries are consolidated as understanding improves. As a proof issue struck at Philadelphia, this coin features the mirror fields and frosted devices that make doubled die examination considerably easier. The 1963 proof Jefferson Nickel was among the last proofs struck before the Mint suspended proof production from 1965 through 1967.
