1963 Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-002

Description

A proof Jefferson Nickel combination variety — doubled die obverse paired with doubled die reverse WDDR-058 on the same coin — this 1963 WDDO-002 was formerly listed as WDDO-038 before renumbering. Class II distorted hub doubling produces spread on IN GOD WE TRUST that decreases in strength from left to right, with additional doubling on the star and date. The diminishing spread pattern is characteristic of distorted hub doubling, where the hub flexes during impression and creates stronger displacement at one end than the other. Die markers include a dot in the hair and die dots on the collar on the obverse. The reverse, separately cataloged as 1963 Proof 5c WDDR-058, carries its own doubled die attribution, making this a true combo where both dies in the pair exhibit hub doubling — a less common occurrence than single-side doubling. As a proof issue from San Francisco, this coin was struck on specially prepared polished planchets in the standard 75% copper and 25% nickel composition. The WDDO-002 designation after renumbering from WDDO-038 indicates this variety was re-evaluated and elevated in the catalog hierarchy, reflecting its significance as a combo piece.
