1963 Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-008
ErrorDescription
Originally cataloged as WDDO-036, this 1963 proof Jefferson Nickel was renumbered to WDDO-008 after the original variety holding that designation was delisted as too minor to warrant inclusion — a catalog reassignment that promoted this more significant variety into the vacated position. The Class II Distorted Hub Doubling produces visible spread on the obverse, where the proof's mirror-finish surfaces amplify the contrast between primary and secondary hub impressions. A slanted die scratch on Jefferson's collar and a die dot inside the large center semicircular window of Monticello serve as the primary attribution markers, with the collar scratch providing obverse confirmation and the window dot confirming the die pair on the reverse. The renumbering history adds a bibliographic dimension: collectors referencing older attribution guides under WDDO-036 and newer sources under WDDO-008 are examining the same variety, and awareness of both designations prevents duplicate listings in personal inventories. Philadelphia struck all proof coinage in 1963, and this variety documents a hub displacement event within that proof production.
