1963 Doubled Die Obverse DDO-014
Error
Description
Cataloged by VarietyVista under UVC-218 and DMR-023, this 1963 Franklin Half Dollar exhibits a doubled die obverse with medium spread on the L of LIBERTY, the digits 63 of the date, and ST of TRUST — a selective distribution suggesting the hub displacement was concentrated in specific quadrants of the die face rather than uniformly affecting the entire design. The die stage documentation follows an atypical pattern: Stage A at early die state (unconfirmed), Stage B at mid-die state (unconfirmed), and Stage C showing both obverse and reverse at late die state — indicating the confirmed die stage observations came from specimens in advanced deterioration. The 1963 Franklin Half Dollar was the series finale, struck in its last year before the Kennedy Half Dollar took over the denomination in 1964. Philadelphia produced approximately 22.2 million business strikes, providing ample material for variety research. Medium spread on a single letter of LIBERTY (the L), two date digits (63), and two letters of the motto (ST of TRUST) creates a distinctive pattern where the doubled elements are scattered across different regions of the obverse, each requiring individual examination to confirm the attribution. The late die state confirmation for Stage C is noteworthy, as LDS specimens often show additional deterioration features — die cracks, die chips, and surface roughening — that can either enhance or obscure the original doubled die characteristics.
