1963 Doubled Die Obverse DDO-002
Error
Description
Documenting hub doubling on the final year of the Franklin Half Dollar series, DDO-002 of the 1963 issue shows light spread on IN GOD WE TRUST, the date, and the back of Franklin's head, with very light spread on LIBERTY. The graduated intensity indicates a hub displacement affecting the motto and date more strongly than peripheral lettering. Attributed by VarietyVista with die markers UVC-199 and DMR-004, all three progressive stages are confirmed: Stage A shows both obverse and reverse in early die state, Stage B presents both in mid-die state, and Stage C documents both in late die state. Complete documentation across all stages is noteworthy, indicating sufficient specimens have been studied to confirm the die's full production life. This variety can be found in 1963 Mint Sets, indicating it entered distribution through official Mint packaging. The Franklin Half Dollar, designed by Sinnock, was produced from 1948 through 1963 before the Kennedy Half replaced it in 1964. Struck in 90% silver and 10% copper at 12.50 grams, this last-year Franklin Half Dollar combines terminal-date significance with a fully documented three-stage doubled die obverse.
