1963 Doubled Die Obverse DDO-006
Error
Description
The sixth documented doubled die obverse for the 1963 Philadelphia Jefferson nickel, DDO-006 presents medium doubling on IN GOD WE TRUST. This penultimate year of the original-design Jefferson series before the coin shortage era (1965-1967 saw no mintmarks or proof sets) represents the established maturity of Felix Schlag's design, which had been in continuous production for 25 years by 1963. Philadelphia produced approximately 175.7 million nickels this year — one of the higher mintage figures in the series — and the volume of die production generated multiple documented hub doubling varieties. Classified as UVC-1142 with die marriage DMR-009 under the VarietyVista system, DDO-006 carries a medium designation that places the doubling strength in the mid-range: more visible than light varieties but less dramatic than strong or extra-strong examples. Collectors searching circulated rolls of early 1960s Jefferson nickels should examine the IN GOD WE TRUST motto under magnification, checking each letter for thickened serifs or notched edges that indicate a secondary hub impression.
