Description

The primary doubled die obverse for the 1963-D Jefferson nickel, DDO-001 features strong counterclockwise spread on the upper portion of the 6 digit in the date — a notably specific diagnostic that makes this variety readily identifiable once you know where to look. Strong counterclockwise (CCW) spread on a single date digit is an unusual presentation; most Jefferson nickel DDOs show spread across the entire IN GOD WE TRUST motto, but here the hub misalignment manifested most clearly on the upper curve of the 6. Denver produced approximately 276.8 million nickels in 1963, one of the highest Denver mintages in the series, though the doubled die variety is naturally far scarcer than the total production suggests. Classified as UVC-1224 with die marriage DMR-003 under VarietyVista, DDO-001 holds the primary position and is distinguished by both its strong classification and its localized, pinpoint diagnostic. Roll searchers examining 1963-D nickels should focus their initial screening on the date area before examining the full obverse.
