Description

Identified by Brian A. Ribar, this 1962 Proof Jefferson Nickel was formerly listed as WDDO-062 before being reassigned to replace the original WDDO-041, which was delisted as too minor. Such renumbering reflects ongoing refinement of variety catalogs as specialists reassess earlier attributions. The variety displays nice Class II doubling on IN GOD WE TRUST, the result of a distorted hub impression leaving a directional spread across the motto. Obverse die markers include a die dot below the T in LIBERTY and a die gouge on the rim above WE. On the reverse, a curved die scratch appears below the right side of the large center semicircular window of Monticello. As a proof struck at Philadelphia, this coin features mirror-like fields that accentuate even subtle doubling. Cross-referenced as Wexler Variety ID: 1962 WDDO-041 Proof. The reassignment history of this variety illustrates the dynamic nature of die variety cataloging in modern numismatics, where standards of significance evolve over time.
