1962 Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-002

Description

Combining two doubling mechanisms on a single die, this 1962 Proof Jefferson Nickel displays Class II distorted hub doubling alongside Class V pivoted hub doubling — an unusual pairing that produces both centrifugal tripling and clockwise spread on IN GOD WE TRUST. The Class V clockwise spread originates from a pivot point near the rim at approximately 3 o’clock, creating rotational displacement distinct from the Class II inward shift. Nice tripling toward the center shows on IN GOD WE TRUST, while the same letters also exhibit the clockwise component from the pivot. Obverse die markers include a short diagonal die scratch under the O of GOD, and the examined specimen is from a very early die state with no other markers present. No reverse die markers have been noted. The simultaneous presence of Class II and Class V mechanisms on a single working die is uncommon in Jefferson Nickel variety research, as most doubled dies result from a single hubbing anomaly rather than two distinct types. This combination makes WDDO-002 one of the more mechanistically interesting entries among 1962 proof doubled die obverses.
