Description

Classified as Class II combined with Class V — Distorted and Pivoted Hub Doubling — the 1962 Proof Jefferson Nickel WDDO-029 exhibits a complex doubling mechanism where two distinct types of hub displacement occurred during die preparation. The strong Class II plus Class V doubling shows most prominently on IN GOD WE TRUST, while closer doubling appears on LIBERTY and the date. This dual classification means the hub was both tilted (Class II distortion) and pivoted (Class V rotation from a point within the design), creating a composite spread pattern where different areas of the die received different displacement vectors. Strong classification on the motto text means the doubling is visible under low magnification, with the proof finish providing excellent contrast between mirror fields and frosted letters. An obverse die marker — a slanted die scratch on Jefferson's cheek to the left of his ear — aids attribution, while no reverse markers have been noted.
