1962 Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-006
ErrorDescription
Nice Class II distorted hub doubling on IN GOD WE TRUST with tripling on the G of GOD and E of WE identifies this sixth doubled die obverse for the 1962 proof Jefferson Nickel, attributed by John A. Wexler under Wexler Variety ID 1962 WDDO-006 Proof. The presence of tripling — three discernible hub impressions rather than the usual two — on specific letters indicates this die received at least three hubbing impressions with measurable misalignment between them, creating a more complex layered effect than standard doubling. Die markers on the reverse include a die scratch above the right side of the long right window and a die scratch above the left side of the long left window of Monticello, while the obverse shows no additional markers beyond the doubling. The 1962 proof Jefferson Nickel was struck at the Philadelphia Mint during the final years of proof production at that facility before the 1968 transition to San Francisco. Class II doubling results from distortion within the hub itself, producing the asymmetric spread that differs from rotational or pivotal mechanisms. Six doubled die obverses documented for a single proof year reflects the concentrated study that proof Jefferson Nickels have received — proof coins are typically better preserved than circulation strikes, making subtle varieties easier to detect and confirm. The tripling on GOD and WE adds particular collector appeal to this variety.
