1962 Doubled Die Obverse DDO-012
Error
Description
Light spread appears on LIBERTY, the star, and the date of this 1962 Philadelphia Mint Jefferson Nickel doubled die obverse, documented by VarietyVista under die markers UVC-1124 and DMR-055. The doubling manifests as a subtle secondary image visible under magnification on the high points of the obverse legend and design elements — the kind of minor spread that can be easy to overlook without careful examination. Stage A shows both obverse and reverse in early die state (EDS), while Stages B (MDS) and C (LDS) remain unconfirmed, meaning specimens showing middle and late die state wear patterns have not yet been verified. The sequence number DDO-012 indicates this is the twelfth documented doubled die obverse for the 1962-P Jefferson Nickel, reflecting thorough examination of this date. The 1962 was struck during the post-war era of silver coinage, in the years just before the Coinage Act of 1965 changed American numismatics. Felix Schlag's Jefferson portrait, which had been in production since 1938, was by this point well into its third decade, and the dies used to produce these nickels underwent the standard hubbing process that occasionally introduced the slight misalignments responsible for doubled die varieties.
