1962 Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-009

Description

A combination variety on a 1962 Jefferson Nickel, this coin carries both a doubled die obverse (WDDO-009) and a doubled die reverse listed separately as 1962 5c WDDR-003. The obverse doubling exhibits a complex Class II and V mechanism — distorted and pivoted hub doubling — producing a nice spread toward center on IN GOD WE TRUST that increases slightly from left to right, with very close spread on LIBE of LIBERTY. The spread on IN GOD WE TRUST also shows a slight counterclockwise rotation from a pivot near the rim at three o'clock, reflecting the Class V pivoted component. Cross-referenced as CONECA 3-O-II-C+15-R-II-C, the dual classification confirms doubling on both sides from this die pair. An obverse die scratch from the 1 to the 9 of the date serves as the primary die marker. Collectors should note both the DDO and DDR attributions when identifying this variety, as combination doubled dies carrying doubling on both obverse and reverse from a single die pair are considerably scarcer than single-side varieties. Struck at the Philadelphia Mint in 75% copper and 25% nickel composition.
