1962 Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-059

Description

Formerly listed as WDDO-067, this proof 1962 Jefferson Nickel replaces the original WDDO-059 listing, which was delisted as too minor. Classified as Class VI Distended Hub Doubling, a nice spread shows on IN GOD WE TRUST, LIBERTY, the star, and the date. On the obverse, a small die gouge appears on the rim between IN and GOD, with another die gouge on the rim above WE. On the reverse, a short north-south die gouge sits between the center and lower crossbars of the E of E PLURIBUS, and a small die dot appears below the S of PLURIBUS. Class VI Distended Hub doubling occurs when the hub expands slightly during the sinking process, producing a spread that radiates outward from the center of the die. As a proof issue struck at the San Francisco Mint on specially prepared planchets, this coin features mirror-like fields contrasting with the frosted design elements. The 1962 proof Jefferson Nickel was produced in 75% copper and 25% nickel for inclusion in proof sets, and the spread on LIBERTY and the date makes WDDO-059 among the more attractive proof doubled die varieties for the year.
