Description

Formerly listed as WDDO-059, this variety replaces the original WDDO-049 listing which was delisted because it was too minor. The renumbered 1962 Proof Jefferson Nickel doubled die obverse exhibits Class II distorted hub doubling on IN GOD WE TRUST, with the spread decreasing from left to right across the motto. Obverse die markers include a die gouge near the back of Jefferson’s head just above the queue and a die gouge to the upper right of the second T of TRUST. On the reverse, a die dot appears above the small right window. The decreasing left-to-right pattern is characteristic of Class II distortion where one side of the hub makes fuller contact than the other, producing stronger displacement on the leading edge of the impression. This variety’s renumbering history preserves continuity in the Wexler catalog: the original WDDO-049 was removed for insufficient doubling, and the former WDDO-059 was promoted into the vacated slot, a standard practice that maintains sequential numbering integrity.

Die Markers
