Description

Forty-seven documented doubled die obverses for the 1962 Jefferson Nickel represents one of the most extensively cataloged DDO censuses in the entire series, and WDDO-047 contributes Class II distorted hub doubling visible on IN GOD WE TRUST. Class II doubling results from a slightly distorted or warped hub making contact with the die during the hubbing process, producing design elements that appear subtly misshapen or thickened rather than showing the clear directional spread of other classes. Philadelphia struck 97.4 million nickels in 1962, a high enough volume to consume many die pairs and generate the conditions for dozens of hubbing anomalies. No significant obverse die markers have been noted, but the reverse of this die is listed as WWHR-002 — a Working Working Hub Reverse designation — meaning the reverse die was sunk from a working hub that itself carried a distinguishing characteristic. This WWHR-002 reverse pairing provides an additional confirmation point beyond the obverse doubling.
