Close Class II distorted hub doubling on IN GOD WE TRUST identifies this 1962 Philadelphia Jefferson Nickel as WDDO-036, the thirty-sixth doubled die obverse cataloged for this date by the Wexler Team. The "close" designation indicates the doubling displacement is narrow — the secondary impression sits near the primary, creating extra thickness and subtle separation lines rather than the wider spread seen on stronger Class II varieties. Two obverse die markers aid attribution: a die gouge between the upper portions of L and I of LIBERTY, and a slanted die scratch running through the T of LIBERTY. No significant reverse markers have been noted. The high variety number — thirty-six — reflects the exceptional volume of Jefferson Nickel production at Philadelphia in 1962, where billions of nickels were struck and the statistical probability of hub doubling across hundreds of working dies generated numerous identifiable varieties. Felix Schlag's Jefferson portrait, selected through the 1938 design competition, was in its twenty-fifth year on copper-nickel composition at 21.2mm.
