Description

Despite its "doubled die" catalog designation, the 1962 Proof Jefferson Nickel WDDO-033 is actually a tripled die — exhibiting three hub impressions rather than the standard two — with close Class II distorted hub tripling visible on WE TRUST. The triple hubbing produced two secondary impressions offset from the primary, creating a more complex layered appearance than conventional doubling. The close intensity means all three layers sit in tight proximity, requiring careful high-magnification examination to distinguish the tripled effect from standard doubling. A die dot to the lower right of Jefferson's ear serves as the primary obverse die marker. This variety is also a dual-variety coin: the obverse die is married to a reverse cataloged as 1962 Pr 5-cent WDDR-079, enabling collectors to document both obverse tripling and reverse doubling on a single specimen.
